Business Email Security Checklist: 10 Steps to Lock It Down

Email is the most attacked part of most businesses - and the most valuable to protect. Use this ten-point checklist to make sure your company's email is properly secured. Work through it once, and you will be ahead of the vast majority of businesses.

1. Set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC

Authenticate your domain so attackers cannot spoof your mail and your messages land in the inbox. This is the foundation. See email authentication explained.

2. Enforce two-factor authentication

3. Use strong, unique passwords

No reused passwords, no "Company@123." Encourage a password manager so each account has a long, unique password.

4. Turn on advanced spam and phishing filtering

5. Scan attachments for viruses

Inbound and outbound attachments should be scanned in real time so malware never spreads through your team.

7. Keep daily backups

8. Encrypt everything

9. Train your team
