What Is Greylisting in Email? A Simple Explanation

If you have ever seen an email arrive a few minutes later than expected, greylisting may be the reason. It is a quiet, clever anti-spam technique that blocks a surprising amount of junk. Here is what it is and how it works, in plain English.

What is greylisting?

Greylisting is an anti-spam method where your mail server temporarily refuses email from a sender it does not recognise, asking it to "try again later." Legitimate mail servers always retry - so the message arrives on the second attempt. Many spam systems do not bother retrying, so their junk never comes back.

It is a middle ground between a whitelist (always accept) and a blocklist (always reject) - hence "grey."

How it works

1. An email arrives from a sender/server your system has not seen before.
2. Your server replies with a temporary "try again in a few minutes" response.
3. A proper mail server queues the message and retries shortly after - and this time it is accepted.
4. The sender is now "known," so future mail from them is delivered immediately.

Why it is effective

Spammers send in huge volumes and move fast; retrying every deferred message is expensive and slows them down, so many simply skip it. Greylisting exploits that, filtering out a large share of low-effort spam with almost no configuration - a useful layer alongside content filtering.

The trade-off: occasional delay

The only downside is that the first email from a brand-new sender may be delayed by a few minutes while it retries. After that, delivery is instant. For most businesses this is an easy trade for cleaner inboxes - but for time-sensitive mail (like one-time passcodes), well-run systems tune greylisting to avoid delaying those.
