How to Migrate from GoDaddy Email to DigiCloudMail
Many businesses start with the email bundled into their GoDaddy hosting or domain, then outgrow it. Moving to DigiCloudMail is straightforward - and because your domain can stay at GoDaddy, you only change a few DNS records. Here is exactly how.
Before you start
Have these ready:
- A list of every mailbox and alias you use on GoDaddy
- Access to your GoDaddy account (mailboxes and DNS)
- A little time for DNS changes to take effect
It is also a good moment to retire mailboxes you no longer use.
Step 1: Set up DigiCloudMail (don't switch yet)
We create your domain and mailboxes on DigiCloudMail first, while your MX records stay pointed at GoDaddy. Mail keeps flowing to your existing inboxes, so nothing changes for your team during setup.
Step 2: Sync mail, contacts and calendars
Using a guided migration, we securely connect to your GoDaddy email and copy everything - messages, folders, contacts and calendars - into DigiCloudMail in the background, while your team works as normal.
Step 3: Verify
We spot-check migrated mailboxes to confirm folders, recent messages, contacts and calendar entries all arrived correctly.
Step 4: Update DNS records
In your GoDaddy DNS panel, we update:
- MX records to point mail to DigiCloudMail (see what are MX records)
- SPF, DKIM and DMARC records for authentication and deliverability (see email authentication explained)
Your domain stays registered at GoDaddy - only these records change.
Step 5: Delta sync
Any messages that arrived at GoDaddy during the switch are captured by a delta sync, so nothing is missed in the changeover window.
Step 6: Decommission GoDaddy email
Once everything is verified, you can drop the GoDaddy email plan (keep your domain there if you like). Export first if your retention policy requires it.
Keep your domain and website where they are
A common worry: does switching email mean moving your domain or site? No. Your domain stays at GoDaddy; you simply repoint the email records. Everything else is untouched.
Why it's painless
The whole approach follows one rule: never switch before the data is ready. Both systems run side by side until cutover, so there is no downtime - the same method in our zero-downtime migration guide. Weighing it up first? See GoDaddy email alternative: what to consider.
