How to Recall or Unsend an Email

DigiCloudMail TeamAugust 26, 2026 2 min read

We've all felt it - the stomach-drop a second after hitting send. Here's what you can really do to recall or unsend an email, and how to stop the mistake happening again.

The honest truth about "recall"

Once an email has left your server and reached the recipient's, it's effectively delivered - there's no universal button that reaches into someone else's inbox and deletes it. "Recall" features that work only do so in narrow conditions (often same-provider, message unread). So the realistic tools are undo send and good habits, not true recall.

Undo send: your real safety net

The practical fix is a short "undo send" delay - a window of a few seconds after you hit send during which the message is held before it actually goes out. If you catch the mistake in that window, it's cancelled cleanly. Turn this on in your webmail or mail app settings and set the longest delay you're comfortable with.

When the email has already gone

If the delay has passed and it's truly sent:

  • Send a brief follow-up - a correction or "please ignore my previous email" is usually the cleanest fix
  • If it contained sensitive data, treat it as disclosed and act accordingly - see email encryption explained
  • If it went to the wrong person, a quick, honest note is better than hoping they didn't read it

Prevent the mistake in the first place

  • Add recipients last, after the message and attachments are ready
  • Double-check autocomplete - the wrong "John" is a classic error
  • Attach files before writing "see attached"
  • Use filters and clear addresses so mail goes where you expect - see how to set up email filters and rules

Calm, reliable email

A sensible undo-send window and a well-organised inbox prevent most "oh no" moments. DigiCloudMail's webmail gives you the controls to send with confidence.
