How to Verify Your Domain for Email

DigiCloudMail TeamAugust 30, 2026 2 min read

Before you can send and receive email on your own domain, you need to verify it and point it at your email host. Here's what that involves and why each step matters.

What "verifying your domain" means

Domain verification is simply proving to your email provider that you control the domain - usually by adding a specific record to your domain's DNS. Once verified, the provider can route your mail and sign it on your behalf.

The DNS records involved

Setting up email on a domain means adding a few DNS records:

  • A verification record (often a TXT record) that proves ownership
  • MX records that tell the internet which servers receive your mail - see what are MX records
  • SPF, DKIM and DMARC records that authenticate your outgoing mail - see SPF, DKIM and DMARC explained

The general process

  1. Your provider gives you a verification record to add
  2. You log into your domain registrar or DNS host and add it
  3. The provider checks for the record and confirms ownership
  4. You add the MX and authentication records
  5. DNS propagates (usually minutes to a few hours) and mail starts flowing

Common pitfalls

  • Editing DNS at the wrong place - records go where your domain's nameservers point, not necessarily your registrar
  • Duplicate or conflicting records - especially multiple SPF records, which breaks SPF
  • Impatience - propagation isn't instant; give it time before assuming something's wrong

Verify once, send with confidence

Getting verification and DNS right is what stands between "set up" and "landing in spam". See why your emails go to spam.
