What Is Email Open Tracking (and Should You Use It)?
Ever wondered if a client actually opened your email? Open tracking promises to tell you - but the reality is more nuanced. Here's how it works and whether it's worth using.
How open tracking works
Open tracking embeds a tiny, invisible image (a "tracking pixel") in the email. When the recipient's mail app loads images, it requests that pixel from a server, which records an "open". No image load, no recorded open.
Why it's not always accurate
Because it depends on images loading, open tracking misses a lot and sometimes over-counts:
- Images are often blocked by default, so genuine opens go unrecorded
- Privacy features pre-load images for everyone, inflating opens with "opens" that never happened
- Plain-text readers never trigger the pixel at all
So treat open rates as a rough signal, not a precise measurement.
The privacy angle
Tracking pixels are, by nature, a form of surveillance - and recipients increasingly dislike them. Overusing tracking can erode trust, and aggressive trackers can even hurt deliverability or trip spam filters. Keep it respectful. See how to reduce email spam complaints.
When tracking makes sense (and when it doesn't)
- Reasonable: aggregate trends on a newsletter or campaign, to compare subject lines over time
- Less reliable: concluding a specific person "read" a specific one-to-one email - the data simply isn't that trustworthy
For important one-to-one mail, a direct follow-up is more reliable than a pixel.
Focus on reaching the inbox first
Tracking opens is pointless if your mail lands in spam. The higher-value work is deliverability - authentication, reputation and clean sending. See how to improve email deliverability and transactional vs marketing email.
